Moving your pet to Kona

No other option gets a pet from Seattle to Kona faster than a flight: about 6 hours airborne rather than days of driving, and for Hawaii it is the only practical way. Pets ride as airline cargo inside an approved crate.

Kona takes pets straight from the mainland only with a Neighbor Island Inspection Permit, arranged 30 days or more before arrival with a private vet inspector booked at the airport. The Kona side of the island is dry and sunny, and the airport is not on the summer limit list.

We look for the flight and time of day that put the least strain on your pet, and we work out the timing with you so a person is waiting at both ends. Airline space, weather and breed rules affect every booking, so nothing is final until the airline confirms the flight.

Hawaii

Hawaii's entry rules for dogs and cats

Hawaii is rabies free and protects that with strict entry rules. If your pet meets them on time, it can be released at the airport the day it lands instead of going into quarantine. The main steps, from the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity:

  1. A working microchip, implanted before the rabies blood test.
  2. At least two rabies vaccinations in your pet's life, more than 30 days apart, with the latest one more than 30 days before arrival and still current.
  3. An OIE-FAVN rabies blood test at an approved lab, with a passing result, then a 30-day wait from the day the lab received the sample.
  4. An original health certificate in English, issued within 14 days of arrival, with the vet's statement that your pet was checked and found free of screwworm.
  5. A tick treatment by a vet within 14 days of arrival, written on the health certificate.
  6. The Dog and Cat Import Form (AQS-279) and the documents sent to the Animal Quarantine Station ahead of time, by mail or online through the state's pet owner portal: 10 days or more before arrival for Honolulu, 30 days or more for Kona, Maui and Lihue.

Flying straight to Kona or Maui needs a Neighbor Island Inspection Permit, arranged 30 days or more before arrival.

Plan at least 2 to 4 months ahead. The blood test result alone can take weeks, and arriving before the waiting period ends means quarantine.

Read the full checklist on the state's animal quarantine page, and our guide to moving pets to Hawaii.

Airline rules that matter on this route

  • Health certificate: any pet in the cargo hold must have one, signed by a licensed vet within 14 days of departure. Details on our vet health certificate for flying page.
  • Temperature: as a rule, pets go in the cargo hold only when every airport on the trip has a forecast of between 45°F and 85°F. The dates are in summer heat rules.
  • Breeds: the cargo hold is closed to snub-nosed breeds, such as every bulldog, boxer, pug and mastiff, plus Persian and Himalayan cats. The full list is in snub-nosed breeds and flying.
  • Size: a limit of 150 lb for pet and crate combined, and crates no bigger than the 500 series. Larger pets get a custom quote. Sizes are on airline pet crates.
  • Pickup on time: the airline gives 4 hours after landing for collection, so we plan the pickup before booking.

Entry rules for Hawaii

Two sets of rules apply: the airline's, and those of the state your pet is moving to. For any pet flying in the cargo hold, the airline needs a health certificate from a vet within 10 days of the flight (14 days for Hawaii). Ask for it from a USDA accredited vet, on an official state form or an electronic certificate, with the rabies vaccine details on it. That one certificate meets the state rules below in almost every case.

  • Hawaii is rabies free and has its own entry program for dogs and cats of any age, puppies and kittens included. Plan at least 2 to 4 months ahead.
  • The health certificate must say your pet was checked and found free of screwworm.
  • Hybrid dogs and cats, such as wolf crosses, Bengals and Savannahs, cannot enter Hawaii.
  • You can send the forms by mail or online through the state's pet owner portal.

How to help your pet settle in

Seattle to Kona: questions

What does it cost to fly a pet from Seattle to Kona?
Size and weight matter most, since the airline bills for your pet and the crate weighed together. How far each home is from its airport, whether you buy a crate from us, and the season also play a part. For most dates, the form puts a price on your screen. Read what affects the cost for more.
How long is the flight from Seattle to Kona?
Scheduled time in the air: about 6 hours. Add the cargo hand-in, at most 4 hours ahead of departure, and the wait after landing, normally around 1 hour, and the trip from one door to the other takes up most of a day.
Can you deliver my pet to my door in Kona?
Yes. We arrange collection at KOA airport cargo and the drive to your new home in the Kona area. Would you rather have a person you choose pick your pet up at cargo? That works too. Your quote lists what is covered for your address.
Is a health certificate required to fly to Kona?
Yes. Any pet in the cargo hold must have one, signed by a licensed vet within 14 days of departure. Hawaii also sets entry rules, covered further down. Our page on the vet health certificate for flying has the details.
Do I have to be on the same flight as my pet?
No. As airline cargo, your pet has its own booking, so your travel day is up to you. Plenty of owners go ahead, get the new place ready, and have their pet follow a day or two after.
