Moving your pet to Toronto

Toronto is on the other side of the continent, three hours ahead of Seattle. Summers are hot and humid and winters are cold and snowy, so spring and fall are the easiest seasons for a move. Delivery covers the city and the GTA, from Mississauga to Markham.

We plan the safest way for your pet, based on the breed, age, the weather and your dates, and we set the timing with you so someone is there at both ends. You can travel the same day or another day: many owners go first, get the new place ready, and have their pet follow.

What your pet needs to enter Canada

  • Dogs and cats 3 months and older: a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet, in English or French. It describes your pet, names you as the owner, and gives the vaccine date, its trade name and serial number, and how long it is valid. With no validity written on it, Canada counts it as 1 year, so a 3 year vaccine needs the 3 years on the certificate.
  • Puppies and kittens under 3 months: no rabies certificate, but proof of age from a vet.
  • Dogs under 8 months: for Canada, a dog travels "accompanied" only with its owner. Yours travels without you, so it also needs a vet health certificate from an exam in the 72 hours before it arrives in Canada.
  • No microchip is needed for a personal pet, and no USDA endorsement.

Canadian border officers check the papers and that your pet matches them. Originals are best, since copies may not be enough. The full rules in both directions are in our guide to moving a pet between Canada and the US.

Last checked against the official pages on October 9, 2026.

Border and state rules can change, so we check the official pages again for every move.

Settling in Toronto

  • Toronto has off-leash areas in many parks; everywhere else, dogs stay on leash. Winters bring road salt, so rinse your dog's paws after walks.
  • Book a visit with a local vet in the first few weeks, records in hand.
  • Update your address and phone number with the microchip registry.

How to help your pet settle in

Seattle to Toronto: questions

What does it cost to move a pet from Seattle to Toronto?
It depends on the two addresses, your date, how many pets move and what each one needs, such as a crate or a vet visit. We plan every move across the border with you and email your quote once it is ready, with a list of what it covers.
How long does the move take?
It depends on your pet, your dates and the papers. Your quote gives you the pickup day and the delivery day, and we keep you posted until your pet is home.
Who takes care of customs?
We arrange customs clearance through a licensed customs broker, as part of the move, and tell you which papers we need from you. Border officers make the final decision on every pet.
Does my dog need a microchip to enter Canada?
Canada does not ask for one for a personal pet. We still recommend it: if your dog ever comes back to the US, the CDC asks for a microchip a universal scanner can read.
Do I need a USDA endorsed health certificate?
Not for a personal pet dog or cat going to Canada, according to USDA. A dog under 8 months does need a vet health certificate from the 72 hours before it arrives, without the USDA endorsement. We time the vet visit for it.
Can I ride along with my pet?
No. Your pet travels without you. You, or an adult you name, takes over at the new door.
Can you move a snub-nosed breed?
Yes. Pugs, French bulldogs, boxers, Persian cats and other snub-nosed breeds can move with us. We plan the safest way for them and keep them out of the heat.
What if my pet is going to be sold, adopted or bred?
Then it counts as a commercial import, with stricter rules on both sides of the border. Tell us in the quote form and we look at it by hand.
